This is a tough record to resist. Meraung’s name may refer to a howl of pain or emotion but their music manages the perfect balance between melancholy and power. The four-piece wield their shoegaze might with just the right amount of restraint and the effect is impressive.

Their previous work had already suggested this skill was within their grasp, 2024’s epically soaring standalone track “Mimpi” was a wall-of-sound style declaration of intent that Change fully delivers on.

An EP comprising five songs all hovering around the three to three and a half minute range, none outstaying their welcome. Meraung now embraces English lyrics and it works but I hope they don’t abandon the option of singing in Indonesian in the future. Nadya Roshalina emerges from the dense layers of past songs and reveals herself as a coolly impressive frontperson with a voice perfectly able to float above the swirling twin guitar maelstrom expertly provided by Muhamad and Cintarama.

“Moment With You’ is an emotional tidal wave of sound and sets the tone for four more bursts of happy/sad euphoria. Not afraid to hide pop songs within the noise, Meraung have created an EP that lifts and consoles while acknowledging the sadness around us.
