Five tracks of luscious, lilting jangle pop to lift you out of the depths of winter, and who doesn’t need that right now? Danny Rowland of Seapony follows up two earlier cassette releases and delivers an old-school EP where every song sounds like an A-side.
But starting at the beginning: “Where You Are” leaps straight in on a honeyed strum. Danny’s gentle, hushed vocals tell a story of absence and intense emotion within just a few pared-down, haiku-like lines - just enough to fill the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it one minute thirty-eight seconds.
“Wish I Knew” evokes The June Brides, diving deep into the melancholy of summer’s end and raising the question: is there anything more plaintive than a few notes struck on a xylophone?
Actually, maybe I was wrong, “Go Too Far” may just be the highlight, with its minimal guitar hook overlaying Danny’s vaporous voice. It sounds like a lost gem from that golden age of ’80s U.S. indie, when R.E.M. inspired a wave of guitar-pop beauty that, for a brief moment, seemed to exist in a world apart from the crass realities of commerce.
These songs are like smudged brushstrokes on canvas, revealing fragments of stories and allowing you to fill in the details, avoiding grand gestures and instead insinuating themselves craftily into your subconscious.
Sometimes the quietest voices say the most.
